Kausani

Kausani is a hill station and village situated in Bagheshwar district in the State of Uttarakhand, India. It is famous for its scenic splendour and its spectacular 300km wide panoramic view of Himalayan peaks like Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Panchachuli.
Kausani covers a total 50.2 square kilometre area and is 6200ft above sea level. Kausani is in Bagheshwar district at a distance of 40 km from Bagheshwar city.
Due to the altitude, the temperature ranges from 10’c to 26’c during summers and the temperature falls to 2’c-15’c during winters.
According to Mahatma Gandhi, Kausani is the Switzerland of India. Mahatma Gandhi had spent some days and wrote his commentary on Anashakti Yog in Anashakti Ashram also known as Gandhi ashram by the common people. The ashram’s rest house is an ideal place to stay and it provides the best panoramic views of the mountains.
It is preferable to book the VIP rooms, i.e. room no. 1&2 because it has the best spot from where you can see the whole panoramic view of the Himalaya range. During the time of sunrise and sunset, a tourist staying near to the ashram comes inside the ashram to see the splendorous scene. If the VIP rooms are not available then private hotels may act as the best option. They may charge a little more than what the ashram is charging but you won’t compromise on the view of the Himalaya you are getting.
Food is available in the ashram as well as in the hotels. If you are running short in budget or you are planning to eat healthy veggies then it is preferred to get in contact with the caretakers of the ashram. Non-Vegetarian food is strictly prohibited inside the ashram. You can carry snacks but be careful of the notorious monkeys staying there. They don’t act as any threat to the travellers but may snatch away your foods. The rooms main door must be properly locked as the monkeys can enter inside the room you are staying and may take away food items or any other things which will attract their eyes.
Here I would like to share one of my experiences of encountering a monkey. We were tired of travelling and after having lunch we went to take rest in our respective rooms. We were careless and forgot to lok the main entrance gate. Through that gate a monkey entered in our room and searched for food, got a hold of the breads packet and ran away. We thought it was someone from our family but later we were told by the caretakers that the monkey took away a packet of bread from our room. After eating the bread the monkey threw the packet in the waste bin.
